South Africa just could not get enough of a feisty Metro Cop vs an arrogant driver today in a video that went viral almost over night.
I don't usually post about scenarios like this but it is a very interesting case indeed. I happened to watch this video on Facebook last night, it was shared on a friends wall and showed up on my newsfeed. I only hit play because being new to Jozi I was excited I could identify the two street names in the description so I wanted to know, what happened down the road from me?
I played the video automatically assuming it was just another one of those videos where you see your everyday South African altercation, and boy was I wrong.
The video is a lengthy 8.14 minutes long, it depicts a rather irritated motorist who is recording the video - interact with a sarcastic Metro Cop who is issuing him with a ticket.
The man recording the video we find out is Clive Naidoo, as his personal information is recorded in the video you can clearly hear his name, number and address being called out.
The two pass comments back and forth to each other. First with Clive asking the Metro Cop to go faster and when she refuses he whips out a not so nice comment saying he pays her salary because he pays tax and she retaliates with a swift and sharp comeback.
But it doesn't end there and this back and forth goes on for a while with the metro cop blatantly undermining where Clive lives and mocking the fact that he is recording this ordeal by parading around and saying "I've never been on TV before I hope my father sees me."
Well miss Metro Cop I'm sure he did, this video went viral.
If you haven't seen it yet, where have you been and here is a link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9C2tu4s9KTQ .
After watching the video I had some thoughts on the matter but it was out of mind in 5 minutes, to my amazement by this morning Twitter, Facebook and various news sites were blowing up with Bloubosrand.
So many people had watched the video, shared and aired their opinions on different social media sites. Some siding with the Metro Cop and others with Mr Naidoo.
But how did the video get online? Clive Naidoo the motorist who allegedly ran a red robot uploaded it onto his Facebook with the following caption:
"On Friday 28 August 2015 approximately 08h45 at the intersection Bram Fischer Drive and Jan Smuts Ave, I was pulled over by a polite female JMPD officer who went and checked my licence disk then came to my window and greeted and I gave her my drivers licence. At that stage another very abrupt and arrogant female JMPD officer barged in saying “you got four eyes can’t you see you shot the robot”.I replied “sorry, I got two eyes and a pair of glasses and might be you got four eyes”. At that stage she grabbed my drivers licence from the other officer and went to get a fine book.I realised that this was not going to look good so at that stage I started recording the conversation; watch what transpired."This indicates that he was looking to get some sort of momentum going to expose this cops bad behaviour but by this evening, it looks like it may have backfired.
There has been an overwhelming response on twitter with the hash tag Bloubostrand which started trending earlier today in favour of the Metro Cop. Whatever support the motorist may have had, seemed to be lost in a sea of well wishes for the Metro Cop.
Tweets came rolling in saying that the Metro Cop made some peoples day and that Clive got what he deserved and as much as this is a serious topic it is fun to watch this flamboyant Metro Cop go for gold on camera.
But once we get a laugh out of it what do we really see? Two South Africans, with bad attitudes acting out of ignorance. Both parties were in the wrong, no one showed an ounce of being humble and that is disappointing.
Now that most of South Africa has had a giggle after 8.14 minutes of this (by minute 2 I was wondering when it would end) we should look at the implications.
Firstly Clive Naidoo was foolish to think he could get back at the Metro Cop by trying to expose her and to add to that, unfortunately even though it did occur to him that his personal details were loud and clear he surrended the clip to the internet (and we all know, there are no take backs once that upload is complete.)
I must say even though that wasn't a very bright idea, not all South Africans out there are nice. I have seen hate tweets going out to him as well as a picture posted by a twitter user of Clive and his wife, which states it has been taken from his wife's Facebook profile. I don't know how true this is but it sure is wrong.
In an article by IOL News (http://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/gauteng/so-who-is-the-real-clive-naidoo-1.1909052#.VeYRO_mqqko) another confused Clive Naidoo has been receiving tweets in regards to the incident he had no idea about. The article states he had got back from a holiday on Sunday to find out he was a victim of mistaken identity and had to clear his name.
Clive Naidoo has since created a twitter account admitting he was in the wrong, apologising and pleading with people to respect him but it seems to be to no avail, people are still throwing a lot of shade towards him.
Judging from one of his recent tweets he may also be receiving unwanted calls and texts. This man may not have done the right thing but It is escalating at pace that I don't think is fair.
As for the Metro Cop, who knows maybe she had enough of people undermining her job and Mr Naidoo was in the wrong place at the wrong time. But being in a position that she is I feel she could have handled it better. Metro Cops, or Police in general are already given a bad reputation about being corrupt just the other day a picture of a S.A cop in a police van, wearing uniform passed out at the wheel with what looked like a bottle of alcohol between his legs was doing the rounds.
This Metro Cop could have handled the situation better but she didn't and I think there is something to learn from this although she may have done the best she could in this frustrating situation she did have a choice to be humble and set an example to others.
With that said it is a funny yet unfortunate the way things have transpired and with people hiding behind keyboards (like I am) it can be easy to get nasty with someone who is in no position to stand up for themselves as well as encourage hate speech and cyber-bullying.
