Eyebrows on Fleek

PART 1

Beauty regimes have become more complexed and detailed over the last couple years and more recently perfect eyebrows have been in the limelight. Hastags on instagram may read #eyebrowsonfleek a term used to show off ones perfectly groomed eyebrows.

But where did this term come from and what on earth does on fleek mean (if you aren't a teenage girl it may be hard to understand this at first.) Well a Viner by the name of Peaches Monroe uploaded a video talking about how her eyebrows were on fleek and the term seemed to catch on like wild fire.

Urban Dictionary defines the word fleek, as being on point so ''eyebrows on fleek'' essentially means having well groomed eyebrows which are on point. Peaches isn't the only one to contribute to this eyebrow revolution celebrities like Cara Delevingne is the poster child for perfect thick bold brows.

So how is it that we mere mortals keep up with the eyebrow trends? I started grooming my brows when I was only in grade 12, nothing that was too extensive and I've been doing the same thing for years. It was time to change my routine, but how do you achieve perfect eyebrows without looking like you've taken a black crayon to your face?

This is how I my re-vamped eye brow routine:

Threading / Waxing

Threading and waxing have been around for a long time. When I first got my brows shaped I went to a salon were a trained professional threaded and waxed my untidy brows.

Threading is a means of hair removal originating in India and Asia. Using only a single thread of cotton or polyester a beauty therapist will double it and then twist the thread between her fingers and use it to pluck the hairs from follicle level. The therapist will sometimes hold the thread between her hands and use her mouth to hold the thread as well for fast and precise means of shaping eyebrows.

Waxing on the other hand involves putting hot wax on the area and then smoothing a wax strip over it and pulling it off. New hair will not grow back on a waxed are for up to 4 weeks but you can sometimes see regrowth in some places due to the hair being on a different growth cycle.
I prefer threading to waxing but in a pinch I will get my brows waxed just so that it is neat. I hadn't had my brows done in over two months and It was starting to look really untidy. I tried booking an appointment with my usual therapist but she wasn't available so the hunt for a threading salon was on.

I found that Woolworths in Sandton City had a facility for eyebrow threading, full face threading and eyelash extinctions. It was called Eyecandy Brows. I called them up and found out that they were open until 6pm on Sunday afternoon and I didn't have to make an appointment.

Off I went to Sandton City - when I arrived there was a bit of a wait but I didn't mind. Once the therapist was ready for me she asked me what I wanted done. The shape from my last threading session wasn't completely gone so I told her to stick to that shape but not to arch it as much as it was.

I had to hold the skin above my brow and over my eye taunt as she began to thread. It was a bit painful and at times
(you can also hear the hair being ripped out of your skin!) If you keep it up on a monthly basis it doesn't hurt that bad.

She handed me a mirror to see if I liked what she had done so far and I instructed her as to what more I wanted. She also advised me on the correct shape to suit my face.

This process took around 15 minutes, I find threading to be a quick solution that keeps my eye brows neat for a long time compared to just waxing. At Eyecandy Brow it cost me R90.00 to have my brows threaded, the price of threading can range between R40 - R100 it all depends where you go. Private therapists are usually cheaper but you would have to make an appointment which can be an inconvenience at times.

I have had my eyebrows threaded and waxed, where the brow was threaded and the thinner hairs waxed off between them. Threading is my go-to method for eyebrow grooming it may be a bit painful but the results are amazing.

If you having your brows threaded for the first time it is quite painful but if you keep it up on a monthly basis, it becomes more manageable. I often end up skipping months in-between and found that the longer I leave it the more painful it is when I finally get it done.

Threading is a quick and precise way to groom brows and once you get used to it, you won't groom your brows any other way.

Thank you for reading! This was part 1 of my new brow routine. I will be posting part 2 soon where I talk about tinting eyebrows and how to do it yourself at home.
